Time to plant peas.  Yes, Peas are very cold & frost hardy.

• Ensure good germination by presprouting between layers of damp newspaper.  You must be prepared to plant them as soon as they sprout.
• or, plant in small pots to set out as soon as they’ve come up.

What kind?

• Traditional is shelling. These are Granny’s favorites in the flavor department. Take some work getting out of the shell.  Nothing better than grazing the garden for immediate consumption.
• Next type is snap peas.  They can be eaten pod & all.  Harvest after peas have filled the pods for best flavor.  Yes, they are good eatin’ in the garden, too.
• For Asian cooking, Snow Peas are what you want. Flat podded and harvested before the peas fill out. Traditional in stir fry.

First ask these questions:  1.  How much room is there for a garden?  2.  Do I want Soul Food (flowers) or Belly Food? or  Both?

Granny Tip:  It is fun and productive to grow flowers among the vegies & vice versa.  Remember the “good” bugs need flowers for food.  Growing alyssum, sweet peas, sunflowers & more will attract bees & butterflies.

Flower seeds to start indoors now:  Bachelor’s Button, Sweet Peas, Echinacea, Snap Dragons

Vegetables to start indoors now:  Sprouts, Micro Greens, Lettuce & all the cool weather greens.  Be patient and wait to start peppers & tomatoes in February or March.

Cucumber & Squash planting

Happy Spring! Enjoy the rain. We need it.

However, How are your #cucumber & squash plants doing?

If you planted plants this cold, wet weather will be hard on them.  If you have planted seeds they may rot in the cool soil.  If they get too unhappy there is still time to start over. 

Here’s how to #plant from seed in the garden.

First, wait until it is warm enough for you soil to stay above 60 degrees.  (Commonwealth Garden Shoppe has an easy to use soil thermometer that will be very useful)

1.  Dig in a cup or 2 of organic fertilizer into an area you are going to plant.

2.  Create a mound about 2’ across & 1’ high in that area.

3.  Push 3 seeds about 6 inches deep into the middle.

4.  Water thoroughly & deep.

5.  This is the hardest, most important part.....DO NOT WATER AGAIN UNTIL YOU SEE LEAVES.

Yes, you can start them in pots inside also.  As stated above, don’t keep the soil too wet.....

Squash, Melons & Cucumbers are very susceptible to soil diseases if the soil is kept too wet.

O.K. if you are really in a hurry, put a Wall O’ Water around your hill and this will keep the soil & plants very warm.  Yup, you can get a pack of 3 for $15.99 at Commonwealth.  They are resuable for many years.

Vegetable gardeners, Are you practicing patience? 

Despite the last weeks of warm weather it is NOT time to plant #tomatoes, #peppers, #cucumbers, squashes, bean or corn, etc.  Well, unless you are ready to baby them like some of our experienced, impatient customers. (You know who you are. Debbie, lol)

Season Extenders, AKA – Wall O’ Water can be used over single plants to keep them warm night & day. Come to the Garden Shoppe and see Granny’s Ace tomato plant.

Now is the time to prep your garden.  The above warm weather plants can be planted between May 1 and June 1, depending on where you live.

Work up the soil, get your containers ready, add fertilizer & #compost – there are several ways so choose what works for you.

Our annual sale on Harvest Supreme (which contains 15% chicken manure) will start in about a week.  As soon as our shipment arrives it will be buy 3, get one free. Cost is $8.99 a bag so the sale makes it $6.75 a bag.  Come & get it, Wayne.

 

If you just can’t wait, plant #herbs (but not basil), onions, peas, potatoes, lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, leafy greens, strawberries and other fruiting plants.

Plant seeds for Lettuce, Kale, Chard, (all leafy greens) Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, Onions, Peas NOW!

Tip from Granny – Get your peas going outside quickly: Soak seeds a few hours, spread on damp newspapers and keep warm. Plant as soon as they sprout.  Have their home in the garden prepped since it will only take a few days to sprout inside.

We're Back 2015

We’re Back! 

It has been a pleasant vacation so now we’re recharged and ready to GO.  A lot of time was spent planning for 2015.

SEEDS – We’ve added a new seed company.  www.Botanicalinterests.com seeds will be in the shoppe by Jan. 16. 

They have great non-GMO and organic varieties with extremely helpful, colorful packs.

GARDEN TIPS:  Come in today for a free copy of garden hints from OSU Extension Faculty.

Here’s a couple from Granny: 

• Plant Fall (spring blooming) bulbs by Oct. 31
• When you plant tulips & daffodils, plant a few grape hyacinths.  The grape hyacinths will emerge first and mark where the other bulbs are.  Also, plant in clumps for a more natural looking bulb bed. 
• Plant ground cover over the bulbs for beauty before your bulbs come up. 
• Add some bonemeal for better flowers
• Plant Garlic between Oct. 1 and Oct. 31
• Plant lettuce, greens, broccoli, etc. NOW
• Plant some evergreen perennials for added winter interest.  Ex.  Helianthemum, wintergreen, plumbago and heuchera. 
• Fertilize your lawn with granulated chicken fertilizer
• and of course.....cover your flower beds with out soil building compost

You’ll find granny in the garden or the kitchen for the next few weeks.

Yes!  It is time to plant for Fall Harvested vegetables.  We have starts available & Bruce is planting seeds today for the next batch. 

    Here at the home garden we just planted carrot seeds & prepped a bed for our Broccoli, etc. 

    Part of the plan is to plant some more cilantro, lettuce & parsley soon.

 

Also – Start thinking Bulbs!  #Tulips, #Daffodils, Fall #Crocus, etc. will be coming in Sept.  Paperwhites in October.
